Leveraging the press to create public pressure for reproductive freedom
As the Communications Director at the Women’s Equality Center, I spearheaded strategies to increase global pressure on countries enforcing total abortion bans and amplify stories that highlight the real impact of these laws—especially as Roe v. Wade faced uncertainty in the U.S.
One primary strategy that I piloted: planning research and reporting trips, in partnership with groups like the International Women’s Media Fund and State Innovation Exchange, to bring U.S. journalists and legislators to these countries to amplify the stories globally. See the CBS News documentary about our legislator trip to El Salvador below.
I oversaw all PR and communications for the organization and my team secured influential coverage in outlets ranging from The New York Times to Buzzfeed to The Guardian to Refinery29 — and an influential Editorial from The New York Times Editorial Board.
Our efforts through the “Green Wave” movement, in partnership with global organizations, led to the release of 17 women imprisoned in El Salvador and the legalization of abortion in Argentina and Mexico.
U.S. and International Media
Media relations played a pivotal role in our storytelling strategy. I led communications strategy and rapid response across both U.S. and global efforts, overseeing our agency partnership to maximize impact. One of my proudest moments: Securing a New York Times Editorial Board Opinion piece on El Salvador’s abortion ban, perfectly timed to influence an upcoming legislative vote.
